Joy vs Cordially Wed: Parties, Households and Event RSVPs
Compare Joy parties and group questions with Cordially Wed household contacts, individual event RSVPs, and a shared SMS and WhatsApp inbox.
By Mia ·
Joy and Cordially Wed both let you organize people into a shared invitation and collect individual attendance answers. Joy uses parties and offers questions answered once per group. Cordially Wed keeps named household members under a primary contact and connects the guest workflow to SMS and WhatsApp in one inbox.
If you are comparing family RSVP tools, start with the difference between a shared question and a personal answer. One household may share a hotel address, but each person can still have a different arrival date, dietary requirement, or RSVP. This comparison is published by Cordially Wed and checks Joy's public help documentation as of September 13, 2026.
How does a Joy party work?
Joy lets you group guests into parties so one person can respond for the group. Its documentation covers adding plus-ones and combining guests into a party. This serves the same basic planning need as a household invitation: a couple or family should not have to repeat the process for every name.
A party is an organizational choice, so consider who will actually coordinate the reply. Two adult siblings travelling independently may want separate invitations even if they live at the same address. A parent responding for children may benefit from keeping everyone together. Make that choice around the guest experience.
Does Joy collect answers per person or once per household?
Joy explicitly distinguishes the two. Its question settings can collect one response for a group, while attendance questions are always asked for each individual guest. A group question is useful for shared information, such as one mailing address. It should not be mistaken for a single yes or no covering everyone.
This is a useful capability to compare, not a missing feature to attribute to Joy. If configurable household-level questions are central to your plan, include that in your trial. For any RSVP form, ask personal questions personally and shared questions once where the tool allows it.
How does Cordially Wed handle a household?
Cordially Wed starts with a primary guest contact. Under Household members, you can add up to eight more named people, each with optional relationship and dietary information. Relationships can describe adults as well as children: a partner, parent, sibling, friend, or other family member can share the contact arrangement.
Each added member has their own RSVP answers for the events included in the invitation. The primary contact receives the messages, so a child or relative does not need another phone number just to be counted. This is helpful when one person is coordinating replies for a family but the family will not attend every gathering together.
The Cordially Wed household guide shows the setup step by step. It explains the supported household workflow; it does not claim that Cordially Wed reproduces every configurable question setting in Joy.
Can both products restrict events to selected guests?
Joy's private event documentation lets you choose audiences using tags, individual guests, or both. It also describes how a guest accesses their own schedule and how personalized invitation links can avoid a name lookup.
Cordially Wed targets event invitations using guest records, guest lists, or tags. Members added under a primary guest share that guest's event invitations. They can give different answers, but different allowed event sets require separate guest records. An event with no targeted audience is open to all guests, so set the audience explicitly for a private dinner.
On either product, test the invitation boundary before sending: who may see the event, who may RSVP, and what the resulting headcount includes. Private events and per-person RSVPs solve related but different problems.
Example: a family shares an invitation but has different RSVPs
Imagine Alex, Sam, and their parent Jordan are invited to a welcome dinner and reception. Alex accepts both. Sam declines the dinner but accepts the reception. Jordan attends the dinner and declines the reception.
Your counts should be two people for dinner and two for the reception. A single household yes would give you the wrong answer. A shared address question, by contrast, might only need one answer.
Try this scenario when comparing tools, then add one more test: a person who was never invited to the dinner. In Cordially Wed, give that person a separate guest record with the correct event audience rather than placing them under a contact invited to both events. For more multi-day examples, see RSVPs per person and per event.
When does the SMS and WhatsApp inbox make a difference?
The RSVP form handles structured attendance. The inbox handles the questions that follow: which hotel entrance, whether the shuttle has room, or what changed after a flight delay. Cordially Wed brings SMS and WhatsApp conversations into one wedding inbox alongside your guest records.
That can simplify your contact routine when some households use SMS and others use WhatsApp, especially across an international guest list. Agree on the household's preferred contact and keep their number current. Travellers may retain their WhatsApp account while changing SIMs, but an active account and internet connection are still required.
When comparing with Joy, check the actual channels, country coverage, and reply workflow you need. The party and private-event documentation cited here is not evidence that Joy lacks a particular messaging feature. Our wedding SMS and WhatsApp guide explains Cordially Wed's channel setup.
Which is the better fit for your guest list?
Joy deserves a place on your shortlist if party grouping, individual attendance, and configurable group questions match your needs. Test those settings with a real family example.
Choose Cordially Wed when the primary-contact household model fits your invitations and you want named members, individual event answers, and SMS plus WhatsApp guest conversations in the same workspace. Guest list management and RSVPs are free; guest texting is paid.
Neither a feature checklist nor a comparison article can prove which interface your relatives will find easier. Build one household, add two events, and have someone try the RSVP. Compare the resulting counts and the work required to follow up. If you are also considering Zola, see the Zola household setup comparison.
